When I Think of Spring...

A couple of recent conversations sprung this post. Our little friend, Rob, was working on a school project this weekend where he had to pick one thing that reminded him of spring and work up a little report.  He glued bird seed next to a drawing of his bird and read us his found facts on the Brown Thrasher - did you know they can get a little vicious? It was cute to watch his dad coach him on first grade public speaking skills and to be his audience. My grandmother and I were looking through old pictures the next day and she told me of her first memory where she truly felt the beauty of the earth on a warm spring day. What a gift, I thought. To remember that experience all these years later. I realized that I had a first memory as well. It was about this time of year and I was about 6 or 7. My mom had sent me outside before school to feed our dog, Buster, and I remember being enamored by the beautiful morning. The air, the light sparkling on the lawn, the whole day seemed magical and I remember twirling around in the backyard enjoying it. Unlike Rob, I couldn't think of just one thing that reminds me of spring, do I present my top favorites of spring in Memphis:

The Patio:  David and I have been enjoying a lot of nights on the patio lately; just enjoying each others company and watching Penny lose her mind chasing evil bees and birds from the yard. How dare they enter her domain? How dare they? Spring is also the time I like to take books outside and read on the patio. On days that beg to be outside, if the dog has not claimed me for a walk, you can find me digging in the dirt or propped up with a book, wine or tea beside.

Free them feet: When the weather warms, I get really excited about free feet. Close-toed shoes stifle my soul and it's time to let feet be free!

Is there ANY better smell than honeysuckle?? I will answer, no. There's not. Honeysuckle means that my plants are in the ground and I;m having dinner outside and I am not sweating to death and that summer is coming. The really great fresh part of summer that's full of fresh vegetables and popsicles and Saturdays at the pool.

Outdoor events: The Levitt Shell has to be one of the coolest things Memphis has done lately (there's a lot of cool things, but this makes it pretty high on my list). I like the spring concerts over the fall because the light lingers and it feels like an overgrown church picnic with killer awesome music. Art Festivals are galore this time of year. We went to Double Decker last weekend (as attendees this year!) and could fill just about every weekend with one through the summer. Memphis in May! What more to say- eat and concert yourself out in May with: Italian Fest, BBQ Fest, Greek Fest, Israeli Fest, Music Fest and wrap it up with Sunset Symphony on the river.

Wowsa. It's gonna be a great spring. I can feel it!

Cocktail and Art Pairing

Need a fresh bevvy to spice up the middle of the week? I have a new mocktail that is sure to delight! I started with Pretty Plain Jane's pin earlier this week to use grapefruit and limes and added my own twists.  I like to pair flavors and colors to add to the experience of a painting. I concocted this beverage to pair with a new piece, "Tart"! This painting provided the perfect inspiration- the tart citrus with the sweet raspberries contrast nicely like the colors of the painting. Bold raspberry hues tart with crisp turquoise and lime flavor this painting with delicious color and an exciting viewing experience. Trot on over to the website to see this little lovely in person. But before you do, mix up this little fizzy to drink while you view!

Grapefruit Tart Fizzy  {makes 1}

1 Grapefruit
1 lime
tsp raw sugar
4-6 raspberries
ice cubes
club soda (or tonic water)

Squeeze 1/2 grapefruit and 1/2 lime and pour juice into glass. Stir in sugar. Add ice cubes, slice of lime, slice of grapefruit, and raspberries. Top with club soda. For extra pizazz: rub a lime wedge over the rim of glass before mixing drink and press into granulated sugar to coat the rim.

Updating and Sophisticating

I just finished up this fun project for Mary and her daughter who were wanting a more sophisticated piece of art in her room. I sent her multiple images of what several different paintings would look like on the wall with all her daughter's colors and they chose "Green Day" in a 30" x 30."  This painting came together when I was in a really good mood with strong lemon and lime vibes coming through that day. I saw this color palette on my mixing board and had to turn it into a piece. I was really excited when they picked this one because it feels young and bright and full of promise with the limes and yellows and chartreuse all splash against each other like a summer day just waiting to burst forth.
Perfect for a college girl's space.

A huge thanks to Mary and her daughter for letting me be a part of your room in such a special way. I hope it brings you joy every time you look at it!
These projects are my absolute favorite because you select your favorite piece and after I help you pick the right size, it's ready in under 2 weeks! So fun and easy and delightful to get a painted- to - order piece of your very own!

Color Crush

Happy Friday! I hope you're enjoying this gorgeous day as much as I am. I was out on a walk this morning and was reveling in the gorgeous colors that are springing up from the ground just this week! It never ceases to amaze me at how spring just knows when to arrive and it just does its thing to our utter delight. I came across this gorgeous color palette from House Beautiful this week and just had to share it.  The bold orange and blue are making my day. Hope it inspires yours!

Creative People

Sometimes I get this panic that I've had my last great idea and I'll never have another. That I will somehow hit this creative wall and never do anything different again, but the exciting thing about being a creative is that there's always another way around that wall! I was reminded of this when I overheard this quote by Chestnut Hall owner, Michael Baty and I've been mulling on it ever since. My favorite Germantown Interiors shop just celebrated 25 years in business and I couldn't think of a better way to commemorate the occasion than spread some CH love and advice! There will always be another idea and another and another- they don't stop coming because it's who we are and we will never cease to be who we are. At the end of the day this is really comforting to know there's always something new and exciting around the bend and we will never, ever run out of ideas!

Can you believe that April is here? 2014 has already been such a blur and it would be really nice to slow down the clock a bit, but time marches on.

Looking back at the month of March, we are so overwhelmed with all of the amazing opportunities that have come our way and dreams that we didn't think attainable became reality. New York was a dream that am still astounded by and cannot believe it happened.  One more fun surprise in March was a feature in At Home Memphis & Mid South! It was fun to talk about our lives as artists and how our passions and subject matter intersect despite our vastly different styles. A huge thank you to Maggie Weir for the amazing article she put together- we are so grateful!!
