Color Crush: Citrus!

Spring Break is around the corner for most of us down here and that only means one thing- spring is coming!!!! I've already seen little buds forming on trees and little green things poking up from the ground. Spring makes me think of citrus and I'm wanting to use more of these in spring paintings. Enjoy this little round up of a citrus color crush today with all my favorite citrus shades!!

Weekend Tourist in Memphis!

Having friends in town really helps focus on how much you love your city because you want to show off the best places and spaces that you love so much about your very own city! I got to play hostess this weekend and felt like I too had gone out of town with a weekend full of nothing but fun in my very own Memphis, TN. These are my top picks for a fabulous girls weekend that didn't break the bank!  1.) Lunch at Acre  - gorgeous rustic modern atmosphere perfect for catching up with an old friend over amazing fare! After lunch, we hit up Sheffields in Collierville and then Saddle Creek for a little window shopping and a failed jeans finding venture.  2.) Saturday we took our lunch leftovers to Shelby Farms (along with everyone else in Memphis, apparently) to enjoy an unseasonably perfect February afternoon. 3.) Midtown was the next part of town to hit up where we browsed around a bunch of shops and tasted beer at the Growler (we split a tasting round of 4 generous samples for $6! ) and had dinner at Chiwawa. Memphis is killing it, y'all! With so many hot new places, it was really hard to narrow down a sampling of the city. It's making me really excited about spring!!!!

Sprucing up the Guest Room!

We have a guest room for the first time ever and it is so incredibly wonderful to get to play host!! I have a dear friend coming in town this weekend and have had the best time this morning adding some Southern warmth to the guest room. Here are my 5 favorites for a cozy bedside table:

1.) Flowers! Always a must and if fragrant ones can be found, the better! I found some tulips and hyacinths today at the market.

2.) Reading material- old and new! On this table, I have "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" by Maria Semple and a re-designed copy of The Odyssey (found at Anthropologie) .

3.) Bedside beverage- for late night thirst attack!

4.) A scintillating candle.

5.) Something quirky to add some personality to the room.

Now we're off for a fun weekend! Have I forgotten anything? Do you have any favorite guest room flare that's a must?

Custom Work: Inspired by Italy

A really fun part of what I get to do is translate a special time and place into a painted representation for clients. This project was really special because I got to take myself on a lovely vicarious vacation as I painted.

This was a recent commission done for the sweetest couple who wanted a focal piece for their den that reminded them of their time in Italy. It was such a fun piece to work on since I got to vicariously return to the Amalfi coast and dream of soaking up the sun in the Italian country side. If you've ever been to Italy, or even just perused pictures, you see color all around. The landscape is positively resplendent with colorful houses dotting the mountainsides and water reflecting a sparkling sun.
I chose to represent their memories of the houses on the mountainside in swashes of bold color, capturing the essence  of the mountainsides you see as you travel along the coast.

Mmmm. Italy. It's always a good time to go, even if you get to travel through a painting. Katrina and Steve, thank you for letting me be a part of your living room and for letting me travel back to a beautiful place through your memories!

Warning: Gushy Post

This is the week that we celebrate love and I've been super reflective on this topic as of late. David and I hit our seventh year anniversary next month and I cannot believe how fast it's gone by! This picture is blown up huge over our bed* and it makes me smile every time I see it. It's my absolute favorite wedding picture and I feel like it's an amazing representation of how I feel most days being married to this man. I take off running with all kinds of crazy plans and I look back and David is running with me (ok, most days he's just trying to keep up with this crazy train). We survived a manic first year and with each year, it's gotten better and better. I wouldn't trade a day without you, David Butler. Thank you for supporting my dreams and loving me so much and making each day a fun day to wake up to. You make my days.

* Fun tip: I took my image to Staples and asked for an engineer print (36" x48") and it only cost me $8! I used spray adhesive to attach it to a canvas and I have an amazing piece over our bed!

Jewelry Re-Vamp

Anyone have that box of mix-matched jewelry in your dresser? The one with the missing earrings, the necklace that you KNOW is coming back in style in just a few more years, the other half of the friendship heart from 8th grade? Well, I have one and I decided to go through it and re-purpose all the cool odds and ends I've collected over the years. Enter my friend, Sharon. She started a jewelry business, Revival Jewelry, a few years ago where she collects vintage pieces and rearranges them into the most gorgeous pieces! She took these two large pieces and made them into the most gorgeous necklaces for me! The tribal looking one on the left came from Ghana and I wanted to make it into a substantial piece. Sharon and I dug through her amazing collection of charms and found these Mexican prayer charms to add to the bottom. I love the international collection of goodies that necklace holds. The one on the right was a decorative furniture accrument that I found years ago at a going out of business sale. I think it originally belonged on a dresser, but I thought it needed to be worn as jewelry! Sharon found the perfect chain and we were in business! Check out her Facebook page for more pieces that she sells. If you're looking for a last minute Valentines gift, look her up!!

A Succulent Centerpiece

Saturday was such a beautiful day and such a great excuse to work on a live centerpiece for our dining room table. This is phase 1 of the dining room. A new light fixture is coming in and I have some dramatic plans for those walls. One thing that is staying is the grouping of David's originals. It's such a beautiful focal point for the room and makes me very happy when I walk in the front door and see the bright scenes staring back at me.

For the centerpiece, I wanted something modern to contrast against the traditional table and picture frames. I had that awesome fishbowl set out and decided on plants that don't need much attention and are, henceforth, hard to kill- succulents! In 30 minutes, it all came together: layers of soil and sand and playful arrangement of the plants and voile la! A succulent centerpiece!
