Pictures...Take 3

A friend sent us these from her wedding and it was fun to flip through and reminisce. While looking at these, I had the realization- it's normally about 3 takes before we take a for real picture.  Happy Friday. You go get 'em, tiger.

The Gift of Simpliciy

'Tis the gift to be simple,
'tis the gift to be free,
'tis the gift to come down
where we ought to be,
and when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained
to bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed,
to turn, turn, will be our delight
till by turning, turning we come round right.
- Old Shaker Hymn

The country is covered in snow and leaving a landscape dotted with simplicity. I love how the barren winter covers the earth with a quietness, an emptiness waiting to be filled with new life in a few months. Today I reflect on letting go and waiting to be filled.

True simplicity at its best.

Client Work- Mantle Art

This was a recent commission for a client's Christmas gift. Her designer and I worked on this project entirely over text and email- going back and forth with a mockup of this piece over her mantle. It was probably the most quick and easy projects I've worked on in a while! After her client picked out the piece she wanted, we saw what it would look like to scale in her living room, got approval, and. I went to work! In 2 weeks, she had her painting. I love the way they framed the cotton field painting- it adds such a great majestic element to the piece. Thanks to Crocker and Robin for being so awesome to work with and for letting me be a part of your living room!

Manhattan Friday

Thoughtful gifts are my love language and I was blown away when a sweet friend showed up today with the cutest and most thoughtful congratulatory gift- a MANHATTAN cocktail package! Do you see the napkins? And the post card? I was tickled pink to see all the love and thoughtfulness that went into this love gift. My friend Melissa has taught me so much about acts of thoughtfulness and the gift of a " happy" to make someone's day. She brightens a room when she walks in and my day was made brighter because she was in it. Thanks, Mel, for making a gal feel special on a chilly January day. Happy Friday, all!

2014 Color Trend

I woke up Friday morning to a phone call from my dad telling me to check the paper. The Commercial Appeal ran a great article on 2014 color trends and they featured the Chestnut Hall Vesta show home with the mantle painting!! What a fun surprise to wake up to! This season, look for neutrals with pops of bold color to stay on trend.

Courage

David did this watercolor several years ago and it remains one of my favorites to this day. It's titled, "The Turning Point."  When I see this, I think of courage. The ability to look fear in the face and stand up to it; to fight for what is right no matter how many odds are stacked against you; to stand for peace and kindness in the face of hostility- now that is bravery and a true legacy to leave behind.  Today we remember and strive to be as courageous as you, Dr. King.

A Huge Announcement...

I've been waiting a while to announce this.

Since August, I believe.

I got an email from Agora Gallery this summer asking me to submit artwork for consideration for representation and I thought it was a joke. And then I read the email again and did some research and they were for real. After several months of planning and pulling things together, here we are, show dates set and a reception on the books and New York, here we come!!!!!!!!!  The exhibit is "The Essence of Abstraction" and runs March 4th- 25th with an opening reception on March 6th. Selected HB paintings are for sale through Agora's online shop, Artmine and selected pieces will be on display in the gallery for the show. Feel free to spread the word. We have a small handful of NY friends and would love for others to come and share the love!

We're jazzed. Reeeeeeallllyyy jazzed and I can't wait! Thankful. Feeling very, very thankful. Overwhelmed. And thankful. The trip also conveniently falls on David's spring break and our 7th wedding anniversary. We have a lot to celebrate! Where should we go? Any NYC suggestions??

Orchid Fest

Orchid has been chosen as the 2014 color of the year by Pantone and there's a lot of brow raisin' going on! Shades of purple are not most people's go-to color palette and I was skeptical at first, but after nosing around, I found some gorgeous interiors using orchid whether sparingly or daringly. Kelly Wearstler pairs it with tangerine in her bedroom, and if Kelly does it, then it's law, right? Lonny features a spread where they have paired orchid with shades of blue and turquoise, keeping the color palette all in the cool family. My favorite color combination is the prchid and chartruese against the black laquered walls. What a pop of contrasting color! If you're not feeling so daring, there's always a trip to the supermarket or florist for a potted orchid to add a tiny splash of this bold new color trend into any existing color palette.

It's my goal to add more purple into my house and art this year. How about you? How likely are you to use purple in your decor? Thumbs up or down???

Monday Mornings: Gingerale-January Spritzer

Perfect little "happy" gifts are some of the most fun presents to package and put together to drop off and absolutely make someone's day. This is my most recent favorite little gift to give and I may have the  most fun putting it together! I've also had some friends whether they be on call or with baby looking for something fun and fizzy and non- alcoholic to drink. Drop the vodka on this and you have the perfect little virgin after-dinner cocktail! Enjoy giving these out or making these at home to brighten up a winters day!

"Gingerale-January Spritzer"

2 ounces vodka
4 ounces ginger ale
1 -2 lemon wedges
Rosemary sprig
Cinnamon stick

-  Fill a highball glass with ice.
-  Pour vodka in glass & top with gingerale.
-  Squeeze lemon wedge(s) over the drink, drop wedge(s) into drink, and lightly stir with cinnamon stick. Gently muddle a rosemary sprig and stir into drink with cinnamon stick. Enjoy!!

Friday, You Golden Child

Friday, you golden child. I like you a lot. Especially when you are 60 degrees and sunny!  Even as a kid in school I wanted it to always be Friday. The promise of the weekend. A day full of relaxed pace and hope of what was to come. Right now the sun is pouring through my windows, filling my room with energy and excitement and I can't get enough of it! This weekend, I'll be embarking on a Gilmore Girls watch fest and painting my new studio space and enjoying the pretty sunshine. Sounds quite lovely to me. A happy Friday and a marvelous weekend to you!

Paper White Winter

What could be more refreshing on a cold winter's day that paper whites sitting in the window to add some foliage to a rainy day? Mine are almost ready to bloom and I can't wait to see ( and smell! ) them in full bloom!

Throes of Winter

Well, it's here. Winter has descended upon us at a wompin' 11 degrees in Memphis, TN today and we're not quite sure how to handle this bitter cold weather. I literally heard my car cracking as I was driving this morning. That's not nerve racking at all...  It is, though, a great excuse to hunker down inside and get to work after a dizzying Christmas season.  It's also the time when I feel the winter blues the most. David just informed me that I get seasonally depressed. Great. I thought I was handling the shorter days better than I am. As we enter 2014, I'm trying really hard to beat the blues with gratitude. I'm about 3 years behind the trend and I have quoted her a ton on this blog, but I'm finally getting around to reading Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts. The entire theme of her book is beating selfishness and weariness with thankfulness and I'm really excited about this new journey. I can already see my perspective slowly changing and my dreariness turning to joy. I'm ready for a new year and new exciting happenings and I've set a few resolutions for the year: being more intentional with my time to create less chaos and more calm, adding more thankfulness to my days, growing relationships by asking real questions and giving real answers, growing some big dreams for art business (exciting news to come!! ), and taking better care of myself with more yoga and Shelby Farms hikes.  What about you? I'd love to hear any tried and true tips for beating winter blues!!
