Small Paintings!

A friend bought several of the small paintings from the Valentines small paintings special and lined them up in her bedroom for a little mix-n-match fest. I love how this grouping turned out. More small paintings to come- stay tuned!

Hot Colors from 2013 Oscars

Color, color, color- I'm dreaming in color and searching for color palettes everywhere as I crank out new paintings for Double Decker. The Oscars last night gave tons of inspiration for hot colors to paint as well as a very entertaining evening watching Seth MacFarlane tank over and over again... Where's that old shepherd's hook for bad performances???  Hollywood ladies, you redeemed the night and took the stage last night, not only with recognition of your amazing performances this year, but with the outstanding display of classic beauty in your dress choices. I oogled over so many gorgeous Oscar gowns last night and could not help but notice an overwhelming simplicity of color palettes among the top dresses. Tangerine is far from over as seen by the many shades worn last night, and neutrals took over from there. So many whites, golds, and metallics were on display- I absolutely cannot choose a favorite. And while I was seething with jealousy over your beautiful colors and perfect figures, I was comforted to hear an actress confess that she felt like her insides were about to explode out of her. Catharsis, my friends. Catharsis. Ladies, thank you for some gorgeous Oscar fashion inspiration and we all rejoice with you that you can let your industrial spanks loose and eat a few Doritos today...

Monday Mornings: Being in the Present

I joined David and a few of his students for a field trip on Friday where we visited the Present Tense exhibit at the Dixon. If you haven't been yet, you must go! It runs through Sunday, April 14, 2013 and explores art made in Memphis from 2001- the present.

I gawked at this painting for a long time and left teeming with inspiration for future paintings. I love visiting new exhibits. They make you focus on the art in front of you and force you to be present for a bit as you examine something that was painted in the past. I'm always invigorated, always pushed to be a better artist and to try new things. Here's to being in the present today and pushing towards new and great things!

Dear Deer

I'm reeeeeeeeaaaaally excited to showcase my most recent custom piece. This was far different from what I normally paint, but it's been one of my favorite pieces, probably because I got to play with huge chunks of paint to form a deer scene.  This was for my aunt. Kristi is an incredible seamstress and we traded artwork for some custom sewing. We chose the deer theme because her husband is an avid hunter of all things four-legged and breathing and thought he'd appreciate a piece of art dedicated to his sportsmanship.  She has been redecorating her living room and this came at the perfect time because I was able to work from her fabric swatches and as her textiles and furniture came together, so did her painting! I was even able to sneak in some swashes of Pantone's color of the year: Emerald green. In her line of work, Kristi stays up on color trends as she works with a lot of interior designers and the hot new colors that they incorporate into their client's spaces, so she was very keen on pulling on-trend color into her artwork.

Here's how it looks in her space:

I was able to get some more pictures of her living room and her color palette that was worked into the painting:

I am in LOVE with this spherical ball of goodness. I'm not really sure what it is, but it adds a great dramatic flare to her sideboard.

Valentines Bomb!

I woke up this morning to a heart shaped note on my studio door, and when I entered, this is what greeted me! David teaches a class tonight, so we won't get to celebrate tonight, and since he's been pulling some crazy hours the past couple of weeks, I did not expect any surprises today. David Butler, you sneak! You got me once again... I think he likes me! Happy Valentines to you all- hope it's full of surprises for you today.

His-n-Her Reality Check- Living in a Mess

This is the reality of our workspace most days. No glitz. Not gonna be on the cover of House Beautiful. Normally creating makes a huge mess and I'm coming to terms that my workspace won't always look like it was just staged for a photo shoot. But it's driving me crazy. Here's to reality and lovin' the mess you're in. A very Happy Valentines Eve!

The Devil is in the Party Details...

French Beef and Red Wine Stew on Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Recipe Here

My sister just celebrated her 26th birthday and we celebrated with a little dinner party. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate her life and accomplishments than with amazing food and the most lovely of friends. It was a wonderful excuse to pull out my dishes that only the ladies appreciate and indulge on a dish that wouldn't normally be in the week night rotation. I spent an evening digging through old pictures and pulling some shots from Instagram (Savannah and her husband Philip are phenomenal photographers- even their Instagram shots are mind blowing...) to use as decoration. At each place setting, there was a card with a picture of her and an intriguing question to ask her. One of my favorite details was a custom wine label (vintage 1987!!) for our bottles. Here's to a great 26 years with you, Nan, and to many, many more joyous celebrations to come!

Monday Morning Indulging... A Cleanse

After a weekend of Superbowl revelry and some serious indulging, I'm feeling the need for a little cleansing. During the winter, I just want comfort food. Creamy, rich, cheesy, comforting goodness. And momentarily I feel really cozy. And then it makes me feel so gross inside. So.... I found Gweneth Paltrow's 5 day cleanse while browsing through magazines at the doctor's office (exciting, I know) and am going to try my own version this week starting with this peach smoothie. We have some frozen peaches left over from our peach picking outing this summer. Let the cleansing begin!
