Speaking of Gratitude...

We bought ourselves a house and got all moved in this weekend! David and I now have some really great studio spaces and are excited about having people in our home again. We feel overwhelmingly blessed with so many people loving us by moving furniture, bringing us dinner, feeding the moving team, giving us such super kind and generous house warming gifts, and helping us paint into the wee hours of the night. I wish I could have photo-documented everyone who has come by to help out in one way or another, but here are a few photo shout outs to our dear loved ones. We are so thankful for you and for all your help and excitement for us. We are looking forward to many many more gatherings together at our new place. Our hearts are so full!

Christmas Wrapping- It's Gift Time!

All that glitters IS gold this year! I dropped off my first load of Christmas presents this morning for a customer and am working on some commissions. This year, the wrapping is just as much fun as the painting process and I can't wait to wrap up more little gifts to share !!

Monday Musings: Fox or Cat?

I snagged this amazing clearance find today on my favorite new accessory- a geometric fox, or so I thought. My brother is insisting that this is a cat and I can't see anything but a fox- I mean, look at that snout! Help solve a domestic dispute- cat or fox, folks?

A Secret Project: Vesta Show Home 2013 & Hillary Butler Art!

I've been keeping a secret for several months now and I can finally let the cat out of the bag! This year I had the honor of working with Chestnut Hall on the artwork for the mantle of their gorgeous show home, Mansion de Piedra, at the annual Vesta Designer Home Show in Germantown, TN. I worked with the designers' color palettes and swatches and we arrived at this dramatic touch for the entry living room. We even custom matched the stain on the frame to coordinate with the living room chairs. It was truly a piece designed for this room (note the gorgeous emerald settee!).  My favorite design team also took home the "Best of Show" title. It was truly a joy and a wonderful experience to be included on such a great project!

Two other new paintings got shown off in the upstairs office nook. This delightfully sunny spot is calling my name!

Thank you to Lana and Stacy for the opportunity to work with you on this- it was an absolute treat!!

Monday Mornings: Gratitude

"And when I give thanks for the seemingly microscopic, I make a place for God to grow within me," Ann Voskamp.  I had this quote chalked up last Thanksgiving season as the daily reminder that I need to be thankful in every tiny little thing. I like this other quote by Ann that summarizes the thought a little differently- thankfulness leads to the miracle of God growing in me. Our recent house hunt has led David and I to talk a lot about what is enough for us- how loosely are we holding our stuff and what does God's blessing look like in terms of things that we have. A recent piece of wisdom I found is that gratitude turns what we have into enough. I want to be content with enough. Today I choose gratitude and await a miracle to grow...

RSVP Magazine Feature!

It's so exciting to announce a feature in RSVP!
I gave a sneak peek a few weeks ago of a behind the scenes shot at designer, Morgan Armstrong's  loft and the spread is out in print and online! RSVP Magazine sent out an incredible team who were so kind and delightful to work with and we were so very honored to be a part of this Room View feature! Morgan and her husband, Nick, have recently moved downtown to a sweet loft and in no time, Morgan had the place all shnazzed up and gorgeously decorated. RSVP gives you an inside peek at her place in the wonderful article here. Check it out!

Client Work

This is a recent piece I did for Amanda Joy. This is a great example of how you can customize a size of any of the available small paintings you see in my shop*. Amanda Joy liked the small painting "Sorento" and I came out to measure her mantle and sent her a digital mock up of what it would look like to scale in her space. We went with a 36" x 48," which is one of my favorite sizes for big over-the-mantle paintings. From start to finish, she had her new painting in 2 weeks. I love how the reds and golds pull together her living room colors and make a dramatic accent piece. Thank you, Amanda Joy, for the lovely experience of working with you!

*The intent of smaller paintings is to cast a vision for larger commissioned pieces so that customers can each own an original piece. In order to keep each piece unique, I sell one mini version and one larger version commissioned in the size of your choice. Check out all the options on my shop site:

Weekend Update: Wedding Wear

It was a fun weekend and a full one- homecoming, our old neighborhood block party, and the wedding of a family friend followed by a Halloween party, of which we showed up dressed as... wedding attendees. I love how this picture blends our different styles- lumberjack and urban glam. I'll give you two seconds to guess which one is the lumberjack.  I'll take that red beard in a bow tie any day! This is giving some serious inspiration for the next house decor.  Think Teddy Roosevelt meets Trina Turk. Meet Teddy Turk, y'all. Happy Monday.

Cocktails & Art: "Charisma" and Drunken Cranberry Cocktail

Image Credit: Drunken Cranberry Cocktail | Charisma available as 24" x 30" at Chestnut Hall and 12" x 12" on my online shop

Maybe it's the crisp fall air, or maybe it's the fact that NOVEMBER is
knocking on our door, but I can't get cranberries off my mind. The deep crimson hues, the sweet/ tart combo- I love it all. Today I'd pair a cranberry cocktail with "Charisma," and get lost in bold corals and blush and raspberry and splashes of contrasting sugary and tangy. Delicious indeed!

Color Study

Long hours in the studio and crazy paint fume induced inspiration are leading to lots of pieces for a busy art season! These two color studies were recently inspired by paint smears on my palette. Inspiration is found in the wildest of places as of late- the top right study being one of them. I love how paint residue settles in the linseed oil medium and I was awestruck by a perfect color combo found floating in the oil this week and had to emulate it in a color study.  Mmmmm. Color!

Monday Mornings: Dinner with Friends

Tomorrow night the ladies are coming over for a casual fall dinner gathering. I love that all it takes is a text to the group with the theme and "come on over" and within an hour everyone replies with an amazing side that they are bringing. I couldn't ask for better food or company! This is the menu for tomorrow night and I want to eat it all right now! What's your perfect fall menu? Taking suggestions for the next one!

Custom Artwork: Abstract Cotton Field

Ashley and her family live in one of my favorite houses in Memphis and I love the fact that they get the rare opportunity to live in what was her husband's grandmother's house in historic midtown. Ashley is getting a great-room makeover and I was excited to get the call to be included on this project. She wanted a piece that was both calm and colorful and one that included the imagery of a cotton field. I worked on several mockups to get this just right and was excited to land on this composition. Bold blue hues and an abstract cotton field were just the right touch for her over-the-mantle focal piece. We made sure that it was large enough for her to be able to move it over her sofa if she wanted to mix up her wall decor. I do love a good versatile piece! Thank you, Ashley, for the lovely experience and the opportunity to be a part of your space!

Monday Mornings: Behind the Scenes of a Magazine Shoot

Collaborations are most exciting, especially when you get to team up with a good friend! A local magazine is featuring the downtown loft of Memphis interior designer, Morgan Armstrong of Memphis Modern, and we had a lot of fun last week playing behind the scenes of the photo shoot. Morgan has this painting of mine, "Safe Harbor" and it's exciting to see it get a feature as well.

This wonderful, awesome, killer, image is by our new friend Nathan Berry( Check out Nathan's work here! ). He shot the spread for the magazine and I got to sneak a peek at the proofs. They are going to be gorgeous!

Stay tuned for more details! Happy Monday to you!!

Casual Friday: Hiking Attire

You're on a hike. You are rocking your favorite old jeans and a sweatshirt because that's what you wear to hike. And you don't have on makeup because, oh, I don't know, you were going to get sweaty. And then this chick passes you on the trail. She looks amazing and fresh. She actually thought about her hiking outfit. And you're like, dangit. I should have cared more. But I'm turning a new leaf. I will own my normalness. Pretty girls, I will not let you interrupt my chi this weekend. I'll pretend I look like this when I pass you and.. ok, maybe I'll put on a little gloss to go with my hiking attire...

Nature Getaway

This weekend, David and I are headed out to a little nature getaway. I'm looking forward to turning off my phone and pretending we have no responsibilities. Simplicity. Ahh. Soaking up the smell of trees and the sound of birds. Let's go now. Ok. I'm there!

Client Work- A Manhattan Accent Piece

This piece arrived in Manhattan last week! Robert and I worked together on this project for several months together emailing back and forth until we got this piece just right for an over the sofa accent piece. It was a happy moment to ship off the final painting. I am hoping this artwork brings you and your family much happiness- thank you so much for the chance to work together on this!

Jewel Tones Painting for Fall!

Jewel tones are most exciting in the fall. I'm pumped about these tones that I'm using for a fall commission and am gathering all sorts of inspiration! I like the crisp white against these rich hues to make them really pop. I'm looking forward to painting up a bejeweled piece!

Fall Decorating: The Buffet & The Island

Fall is heeeeere! It has been so refreshing to walk outside and feel the crisp air and start to smell wood fires and best of all, gathering up ye pumpkins to decorate the house! I've been playing around with my mom's accessories this week decorating her buffet and her island for autumn. One of my current favorite views is through her kitchen doorway into her entry hall. Gets me every time. Is there a sticky note on the back of that buffet with my name on it ? Perhaps, perhaps... Happy fall, Y'all!

Monday Mornings: Painterly Insight From Icon Elaine de Kooning

Elaine de Kooning has to be one of my favorite artists- I mean, look at her. The woman was fierce. Do not mess with the de Kooning. She would take your brush and show you who's boss in 3.2 seconds (this is my favorite piece she did). An abstract expressionist/ figurative expressionist, Elaine continues to leave a legacy of jaw dropping work and studying her work inspires me to grow daily as an artist. I love this quote of hers, one that I am chewing on this Monday morning...

Color Crushin' + Inspiration Sources

Sources: Lululu | The Glitter Guide

I'm finding some color inspiration in peaches and neutrals today. The weather is on the dreary side and these two gals are brightening my day! I'm gonna go paint some shades of peach. Hope you have the loveliest of Fridays!
