Downton Memphis- An Unlikely Field Trip...

Last week, David and I took a field trip downtown to visit a very unlikely hot spot: Elmwood Cemetery. Buried in the heart of downtown, this place blew my mind with the vast amount of eclectic tombstones- most of them insanely elaborate. We discovered that this is the spot for the who's who in Memphis times past. Some seriously famous Memphians are buried here and many tell quite appalling tales. Criminals, adventurers, city founders and developers, philanderers, philanthropists, all are buried together in a beautiful mosaic of stone. It looks like a giant game of chess. David was able to get some killer shots for some paintings. He's in high gear getting ready for a show in August (at WKNO- details to come!) and has been painting up a storm. Here's a few sneak peeks on his blog.  We toured the cemetery for a while and then headed to find a food truck for lunch. We somehow got in the middle of a top secret food truck competition that's soon to air. Perhaps you'll see a very exciting clip of me ordering a taco in the near future. Perhaps not. On a completely random bunny trail, I do have to take note of this shaved ice tent that's in court square. Did anyone know this was in town? I just couldn't stop staring at it, waiting for Dumbo to round the corner. Perhaps I need a circus fix...

Has anyone frequented an odd Memphis hot spot lately! Share! I wanna know what I'm missing!

Sweetly Skirts!

{ The 2 reversible skirts are on the far left with the corners pulled up }

{ Reversible }

My sister Katelynn, seamstress extraordinaire, has been running her own children's clothing business, Sweetly, throughout college and now that she has landed a job outside of the country, she is wanting to sell her remaining skirts before she leaves. She only has 12 skirts left in various sizes. 10 skirts are one sided and are $25 each and the other 2 are reversible (2 skirts in one!) at $40 each. See captions above to view the reversibles. If you are interested in purchasing, please contact my mom, Debra Meadows at debrameadows1(at)aol.com. Hope you can score one before they are gone!

Monday Morning Indulgence: Posh Landing for Penny

Our pup, Penny, has been lounging in style this weekend with her new floor pillow. She had outgrown her old dog bed and I kept browsing through the stores trying to find something that would look nice in my living room and wouldn't cost more than my own bedding, but just couldn't find the right combo. My very sweet mom helped me fashion this gorgeous dog bed for her out of some tangerine outdoor fabric that I'd been holding onto. Running in her sleep, covered in drool, that would be Penny the pup indulging herself on her ever so lovely dog bed this Monday morning. Now, just to figure out what exactly she is chasing in her dreams...

Ikat Fever!

I have a blank canvas for my studio curtains, literally. A huge sheet of canvas drop cloth is waiting for me to paint on a pattern and I've decided to use an ikat style. It took me a while to get on the ikat wagon, but I've climbed on board and am super stoked about these curtains!  I have grey walls and some pops of green, so I want to use some deep navy and pink as colorful accents.  I've scoured the internet for some patterns that I like and these are some that struck my fancy. The bottom skirt pattern is my favorite and I fashioned my own pattern after it, adding my colors.

   I am terrible about mocking up projects for myself, but this time, I am determined to figure it out on a small scale before I get deep into it and decide to go a different direction since it's going to take some time to paint this on. I've narrowed it down to these four. Which one is your favorite? Help me decide!!

Monday Morning Indulgence: The Little Things

We just returned from an extraordinarily refreshing weekend at David's family farm. This was my first visit in prime summer time to experience his childhood in rare form, and I was in heaven! We cooked out in the woods with the fam and afterwards David braved it in the tent with the nieces and nephews during a terrific thunderstorm (I was enjoying the perfectly good bed inside the perfectly dry house).  We picked blueberries, dominated an intense game of wiffle ball, and hiked to the beloved creek, aka going to war with an insane amount of ticks, mosquitos, and spider webs... I sat with my coffee and book on the back porch Sunday morning and reflected on how blessed we are to have such a special place to visit that is seeped with so many childhood memories and so many more memories yet to be made. My soul felt washed clean while I was enjoying the beauty of such simplicity and feeling so many years of love and labor poured into that land and home. This Monday, I am reflecting on the little things that make life so beautiful- the things that cannot be bought with any price- simplicity, thankfulness, family, creation, quiet times of rest, laughter, and taking these with me into the week. Happy, happy Monday, indeed!

Hot Dog!!! A Memphis Field Trip

David and I have been enjoying working from home together these past few weeks of early summer: altered summer hours, dinner on the patio, summer reading, and one of our favorites, Memphis field trips.  While getting keys made at the key stand on Poplar, we took note of Southern Hot Dogs in the lot beside tempting us to indulge ourselves for lunch. And we did. And they were delicious. And my four year old inner self had dressed myself with a striped shirt and shoes, which made me very happy. And I can't wait to visit that stand again because there's something about a hot dog that just makes you feel good and make summer feel right. Happy Friday! Go visit the hot dog stand this weekend!

Better Late Than Never... Christmas in June

My sister received her Christmas present a little late this year, this past Saturday to be exact. You see, it was completed on Christmas morning, buuuuut I had left out her rescue panther sweet cat. So it got bumped behind a few projects and I was able to finish it up just in time for her move into her new abode.  I've been itching to dabble in figures again and this was the perfect opportunity to get my feet wet again. Hopefully I'll have a few more small portraits to share before the year is over. Merry Summer Christmas!

Monday Morning Indulgence: Latest Lonny Issue

Curling up with a magazine and a second cup of coffee has to be one of my favorite indulgences, especially if it's an issue of Lonny. Poor David comes home to a new crazy project every time I read a new issue, and I can thank this magazine for helping me fine tune my style and help give my home some semblance of homey elegance. Playful patterns have recently caught my attention and I am pondering incorporating some of the patterns above into my office. The tiny cheetah spots are extra intriguing to me for some reason. Any patterns that you're fancying and that I must see?

Baton Rouge Illustrated

Gift giving is so ridiculously fun. I get a little too excited about finding the perfect gift for friends and family, especially when you can give a piece of nostalgia that reminds the recipient of fond memories and good times. I worked this up for my friend Laura after my recent visit as a thank you gift for her ever-amazing hospitality (Laurs, you are a true southern, lady despite your Yankee upbringing...) and as a momento of all the fun places we have visited together that she can take with her when she moves.  Here's to good times in the Cajun land and more adventures to come!

Color Crush: Cadmium Red & Mint

I discovered this lovely surprise gift from my sister back porch and it spurred a color palette inspiration of cadmium red and mint green. Since red and green are one of the most direct compliments on the color wheel, it's fun to play with variant shades as combinations and also to avoid the trademark Christmas color combo in the middle of Summer...  I'm brainstorming on how to incorporate these into a new piece. Any thoughts?

Monday Morning Indulgence: New Scents

So I went into Anthropologie to buy a gift card.... and so goes every explanation of the large purchase on the credit card from the Anthro.  Fortunately this time, I only stopped at the sale table and found these scented pretties waiting for me. May I present my new favorite scents, guaranteed to make your Monday morning bright and shiny. I am currently nose deep in my (unlit) Pure and Good Rosemary Mint candle. It is organically heavenly, like a fragrant garden blooming in my office. Holy crap- I'm in love!  And Royal Apothic presents my new favorite perfume fragrance, Bombay Vanilla- a very saucy scent- sultry and deliciously fragrant with spicy vanilla. Perfect for those summer nights out on the town. Head on over to the Anthro and see if either of these are still on the sale table. You'll be glad you did!

Put a Bird on It!

This morning I treated myself to the purchase of these two little ladies while I was in the garden section of the Tuesday Morning. I don't normally gravitate towards the bird theme  for my home decor, but these caught my eye (they're flying, so free...). I love the abstract forms and I've been looking for a way to give my dining room table some flair, as it's one of the first things that you see when you walk in my doorway. Insert birds, some tall branches in my favorite glass vase, set them on my scalloped Target tray, and boom- insta- centerpiece! Happy Friday, y'all!
