Monday Morning Indulgence: Grapefruit Cocktail

I've been enamored with shades of oranges, grapefruit and pinks as I've been working on my spring collection and what more great excuse to find inspiration than making a morning cocktail to kick off a work week. I enjoyed sipping on this with breakfast this morning as the sun poured across my dining room table. This morning elixir is bound to spice up any day of the week, especially those days when you're not terribly excited about rolling out of your warm cozy bed.

1 grapefruit
3-4 sprigs of mint
Spoon full of sugar (I used Splenda)
Splash of club soda
Ice cubes

Juice your grapefruit and add your sugar and 2 sprigs of muddled mint into your glass and stir.
Add ice cubes and top off with a splash of club soda. Garnish with mint sprigs and grapefruit slices.
* Afternoon pick me up- add splash or two of rum.

Happy Monday!!

Spring Collection Sneak Peek!!

A sneak peek of what I've been working on for my spring collection! Soon to be revealed and for sale in the online store- stay tuned!

A Valentine's Treat for You!!

When I was in second grade, I decided that Valentines Day was to be my favorite holiday, and for some reason, it stuck. I've had some insanely wonderful Valentines (going on my first date with my husband) and some not so great ones (sharing and finishing a 2lb bag of m&ms with a friend in one day, depressed over our lack of v-day love), but it has still remained the best day of the year for me.

I hope to spread some cheer this year with a fun treat to share!

I do love gifting a thoughtful and well packaged gift and I came up with an idea for a treat for each day of the week when I needed to give something special. I made seven packages of cookies and designed these tags to affix to them for the recipient to have something fun to open each day of the week. It's the gift that keeps on giving! If you can't gift seven items, I made tags for single gifts. These tags are also great to adorn any gift, not just baked goods.  If you're looking for a last minute Valentines gift idea, download these printable pdfs, package up some goodies, and gift away!!!

Small Space? Bigger Painting!

This is my favorite room that I have decorated in our house. It's light and airy and always a welcoming view when I pass by. I cannot get enough of the afternoon sun that pours in, often inviting me for a cat nap...

The painting above our bed rotates as I sell them, but this one has remained for a while and I've gotten very attached to the massive gold frame. I wanted something very modern as an accent to spice up the room. I went with a 36" x 48" canvas and worked up an abstract ikat pattern, playing with turquoise, burnt orange, and yellow/green. Opposite of what you might otherwise think, larger pieces of art actually opens up the room and makes it feel larger instead of dwarfing it. It's kind of the Alice in Wonderland effect. With bigger pieces filling your walls, you actually feel a bit small for the space, making the house feel larger.

Any other tricks you use to make your space feel larger?

Inspiration: Jacqueline Kennedy

She painted! I knew the most classy first lady had hidden artistic talent.
In so many ways I wish I shared Jacqueline Kennedy's class and sense of style. I would give anything to know what she is painting in this picture.

Artist/ Artista Look: Show Wear

A few his & her picks for our ideal art show attire. David's been rocking the professorly look as of late and his bow tie collection keeps growing exponentially... I'm looking for orange pieces to accent my wardrobe these days with tango being the color that's all the rage. Take note of the Dr. Scholls heels above. Yes. Heels by the Dr. I own the above in tan and wear them every day when it's warm- they are the perfect shoes for being on your feet all day.

New Artwork Available for Purchase

"African Acacias." Acrylic on 24" x 22" inset canvases.
These make great companion pieces or individual statement pieces. Available for purchase at Lisa Mallory Interiors. Gallery info here.

I've been on a warm color kick with spring colors infiltrating the market. Playing with layering not only vibrant color palettes, but also layering colors strategically beside each other in complimentary fashion is making me very excited about my spring collection!  Watch out for lots of pinks, oranges, and yellows in vogue for Spring 2012.  Here are some closeups of the London Bridge painting below:

"London Bridge." Acrylic on 48" x 60" canvas
Available for purchase at my new Shop!!

This was a really fun piece that I worked up for the show, not to mention quite the full body workout as I had 4 x 5 feet of canvas to cover. David's alternate suggestion for the title was "Falling Down." Falling down, falling down...

An interesting note about the history of this canvas: David purchased it for himself after an argument in which I made him mad. He ended up not using it, and I wrangled it from him with the inspiration for this piece. Artists and their vices...

His & Her Art Show at the Trolley Tour

David's family that came to the show and he's the middle of 6 kids. This is barely 1/3 of the whole crew!

I am in love with  Big House wine that DTP served and a little obsessed with this packaging...

Some new paintings I worked up for the show. Available for sale at Lisa Mallory.

Abby and her beau Steven made a dashing apearance at the show. She and I took a moment to show off our Spring 2012 poshness.

Ahh, the Smith/Thomas clan. Always good company and good times.

David and I finally got a picture long after the show at the Bue Monkey after party.

David and I were excited to once again be a part of Downtown Pres's South Main Trolley Tour in January. We worked up some really fun pieces for the show and had such a great time with all the friends and fam that came out to support. We love the adrenaline rush of the show as it pushes us to produce more work and display pieces that get us really excited about what we do. Shows are also a really great place to experiment with pieces that we've wanted to try for a while. David began his first run of prints at this show and sold a few of those. Success!! A huge roaring thank you to all who came out to see us- we had a such a great evening with you!!

Check out some of our new work in our shops:
